Two ferries to increase services across Spencer Gulf
Sea SA car & passenger services has announced that two ferries will soon operate across the Spencer Gulf between Wallaroo and Lucky Bay, boosting the maximum number of services from 6 to 8 per day.
The company’s new 64-metre catamaran, Sea Spirit, custom-built for Gulf conditions, will work in tandem with the current 49-metre ferry, Sea Scape, enabling a single timetable to operate out of both ports simultaneously, Sea SA Director, Stephanie Dawson revealed.
“Sea Spirit will boost our service significantly, providing carriage for up to 93 vehicles and 300 seated passengers in comfort, safety and style,” Stephanie said. “This is a big leap up from Sea Scape, which currently accommodates 52 vehicles and 200 passengers, and will mean we can carry the largest of loads, from motorbikes, cars and caravans right up to coaches and B-double trucks – plus everything in between!”
With finishing touches to the Australian-designed vessel well underway at shipyards in Batam, Indonesia, Stephanie expected that Sea Spirit would arrive at Wallaroo on the Yorke Peninsula to commence service in time for Easter. Onboard features of the new ‘big sister ferry’ will include – air-conditioned café, two plasma TV lounges, kids’ play zone, internet area and tourism booth.
“We have been thrilled with the response to our service in our first year of operation, with more than 82,000 passengers and 35,000 vehicles choosing the 2 hour sea voyage over the lengthy road trip,” Stephanie explained. “We are confident that Sea SA’s popularity will continue to rise especially as the Lucky Bay Road is now being sealed, and based on first year trends, believe there will be the demand for two ferries to operate,” Stephanie stated.
With two ferries working in tandem, departures out of both Wallaroo and Lucky Bay will be possible at the same time every week day, at 7.30am, 10.30am, 1.30pm and 4.00pm. On weekends, 4 daily Spencer Gulf crossings will operate from both terminals on Saturday mornings at 7.30am and 10.30am, and 4 daily services will operate from both sides of the Gulf on Sunday afternoons at 1.30pm and 4.00pm. Additional weekend services will be added in peak periods subject to demand. Bookings are essential and can be made on line at www.seasa.com.au or at the ticket office on 08 – 8823 0777.
