Largest Field Bin ever made in Australia is loaded onto Ferry
A Field Bin with 9 axles and measuring 20 metres long, by 4 metres wide, by 4.2 metres was loaded onto Sea SA's Spencer Gulf ferry, Sea Spirit at Wallaroo overnight in time for an 8.00am departure for Luck Bay on Wednesday 18 March 2009.
Manufacturer, Richard Cooper of Moonta engineering firm, T & A Holdings, claims the galvanised bin, used for grain storage in paddocks, is the largest of its kind ever made in Australia.
"The Field Bin can store 2500 bags or 200 tonnes of wheat," he said. "It will be positioned at Alan Sivior's farm in Cleve on the Eyre Peninsula."
"With a deck area of 1000 square metres, a length of 64 metres, and a width of 20.1 metres, Sea Spirit is designed to carry vehicles of all sizes including B-double trucks, bull dozers with blades intact, tractors, trailers, coaches, M1 army tanks, emergency vehicles including full-loaded fire trucks, and of course, feeder bins," Sea SA Manager, Sue Cassidy confirmed.
"The ferry can accommodate a mix of these vehicles, with a total capacity equivalent to 92 car spaces and up to 300 passengers. A car would normally be allocated a single lane in width and 5 metres in length of deck space, while the Field Bin and tractor towing it were allocated two lanes in width and 30 metres in length – or the equivalent of 12 car spaces," she said.
