National award for CO2 saving
During the first 8 months of operation, Sea SA is proud to have achieved the annual AUSMEPA (Australian Marine Environment Protection Association) award for saving more than 24,000 tonnes of carbon emissions from road traffic annually.
Every vehicle which travels by ferry between Wallaroo and Lucky Bay saves over 350 kilometres in road travel, making the cross-Gulf voyage an environmentally friendly option, as well as a more relaxing way to travel.
Sea SA Managing Director, Stephanie Dawson, said, "Our aim, to operate two ferries on this route, will produce 733 tonnes of Co2 annually. To drive around the Gulf, the same volume of vehicles would produce 25,110 tonnes of Co2 annually, which is 34 times as much. In summary, the new ferry service helps Australia move closer towards fulfilling its environmental obligations under the Kyoto Protocol."
Last month, Sea SA celebrated carrying its 20,000th vehicle, just 8 months since launching the new Spencer Gulf ferry service.
