Drivers go free on the ferry for Kernewek Lowender

To celebrate the arrival of Australia’s largest Cornish Festival on the Yorke Peninsula, Kernewek Lowender, Sea SA car & passenger ferries is offering drivers the chance to travel free on the ferry from 10 – 17 May 2009.

“You can save $65 on a full-fare return car trip on board the ferry between Lucky Bay and Wallaroo during this time,” Sea SA General Manager, Sue Cassidy explained.  “It’s our way of encouraging more people from the Eyre Peninsula to come over and enjoy the festivities which celebrate the fascinating Cornish heritage of the historical copper mining towns of Kadina, Moonta and Wallaroo.”

The Spencer Gulf ferry service has become an integral part of opening up tourism possibilities for the first time ever between the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas, taking out a Silver Medal in last year’s South Australian Tourism Awards.

A survey conducted by the company in conjunction with the South Australian Tourism Commission last year found that the ferry had an influence on the length of stay and places visited on the Yorke and Eyre Peninsulas for almost 30% of Sea SA customers. 

Sea SA has confirmed that to date, more than 183,000 passengers have included a cruise in their travel plans, to avoid the 325 kilometre round-Gulf road trip.

Kernewek Lowender, which takes place every two years, attracts thousands to enjoy the poets, singers, storytellers, musicians and other celebrations which unfold over a week of family fun and spectacle.   

Popular attractions include the Cavalcade of Cars and Motorcycles, with more than 800 vintage, veteran and special vehicles on parade.   Pasties, Cornish engine houses and chimneys, whitewashed cottages, brass bands, singing, maypole dancing and more add to the ‘olde world’ atmosphere.
