When you wish upon a Ferry
School holiday crowds travelling on Sea SA’s Spencer Gulf ferry on Saturday 18 April were treated to some fun when the Make-A-Wish®Australia “Wish Fairies” made their second surprise appearance on board.
Sea SA has formed a unique partnership with the volunteer group, which grants cherished wishes to children aged between 4 and 18 living with a life threatening illness. Local Wish Fairies, Belinda Knight, Betty Watt and Margaret Gogel, of Kadina, brought a little magic to Sea Spirit passengers by handing out balloons and engaging the kids in a colouring competition. It’s all aimed at helping to raise awareness for the Make a Wish cause, which has already made wishes come true for 4 children from the Yorke Peninsula, and last year helped 433 children around Australia. “Seeing the happiness on these kid’s faces when they see their most cherished wish magically come true, is just wonderful,” said volunteer Belinda Knight. “It is a sad fact that there are more kids on the Yorke Peninsula who are eligible to receive a wish and we’ll do whatever we can to make their wishes come true – If that means dressing up as fairies and skipping around on the Ferry then that’s what we’ll do!” The benefits that Make a Wish Australia brings to families whose lives are devastated by childhood illness were highlighted to passengers in a special DVD presentation during the Wallaroo to Lucky Bay voyage. “We are truly grateful to all at Sea SA for allowing us this opportunity to come on board once again. We certainly had a lot of fun and hope that the passengers did too.” To apply for a wish, contact Make-A-Wish®Australia National Office toll free on 1800 032 260, email wishes@makeawish.org.au, or visit www.maw.org.au.
